A colonoscopy is a roughly 20-minute screening for colon cancer and a way to diagnose and treat other digestive problems. Using a flexible tube with a small camera, your gastroenterologist examines the entire large intestine in detail. If polyps or other concerning growths are found, they can usually be removed during the same procedure, and tissue can be sampled for the lab when needed.
You do not need a referral to schedule your screening colonoscopy with us. Through our Open Access program, healthy adults without significant symptoms can often schedule directly, without a preliminary office visit.
Why it matters
- Cancer screening. Colonoscopy is the most effective way to detect colon cancer early, when treatment works best. About 80 percent of people with colon cancer have no symptoms at first, which is exactly why screening saves lives.
- Diagnosis. A colonoscopy also helps us find the cause of ongoing issues such as abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or rectal bleeding.
Our quality numbers reflect how thoroughly we examine: a 47 percent adenoma detection rate against a 25 percent national benchmark, and a 98 percent cecal intubation rate against a 90 percent benchmark.
Preparing for your colonoscopy
You will receive prep instructions to follow in the days before your procedure. Prep usually means a clear-liquid diet, a bowel-cleansing medication, and something to reduce stomach gas. Some regular medications may need to be adjusted or paused, so tell us what you take, including blood thinners such as aspirin, Coumadin, or Plavix. See our procedure prep page for full details.
How often you need one
Adults at average risk are generally screened about every 10 years. If you have a history of polyps or an intestinal condition, we may recommend screening more often. Diagnostic colonoscopies are scheduled whenever symptoms call for them.
